Veterans

American Gulf War Veterans Association/Power Hour Radio Show
The American Gulf War Veterans Association (AGWVA) was established with one goal in mind: To obtain treatment for those service members and their families who experience symptoms collectively known as the "Gulf War Illness". However, there is more to this issue than meets the eye. As this investigation into causation has now progressed into the arena of possible exposure to chemical and/or biological agents, radiation poisoning due to the use of depleted uranium and most disturbingly, the use of our fighting men and women as "Guinea Pigs" in medical experimentation, the AGWVA has now added a second goal: To obtain justice and compensation for all those affected by these illnesses.

Its nationwide network of services -- free of charge to all veterans and members of their families -- is totally supported by membership dues and contributions from the American public. Shipboard Hazard and Defense Program
The SHAD program, part of the Cold War-era Project 112, tested the effects of chemical and biological attacks on U.S. military vessels, aircraft, and thousands of American service members. Some veterans who participated in the tests may not know that they may have been exposed to potentially harmful substances, while many who are aware of the dangers believe that their health has been affected. Every service member who was subjected to SHAD tests should be notified of their participation in order to evaluate their health. Therefore, the conferees required the Secretary of Defense to develop a plan to review and declassify all medically relevant information on Project 112 and SHAD within one year, and to identify participants so that the Veterans Administration may notify them and deliver proper benefits and care. In addition, the conferees required that the Government Accounting Office review the Secretarys plan.

Veterans Report
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (http://www.vba.va.gov), the primary factor in determining basic eligibility to VA benefits is "veteran status," which is established by active military, naval, or air service and a discharge or release from active service under conditions other than dishonorable. Reservists who served on active duty establish veteran status and may therefore be eligible for VA benefits, depending on the length of active military service and the character of discharge or release. In addition, reservists who are never called to active duty may qualify for some VA benefits. National Guard members can establish eligibility for VA benefits only if the President activated them for Federal duty. For more information regarding Reserve and National Guard, visit our Resource Center.
